The United States’ 2026 Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community, released earlier this week, underscores a range of persistent and evolving threats to U.S national and international security.
The report identifies several key state actors, including Russia, Iran, China, and Pakistan, as significant challenges to both domestic and international stability.
In its evaluation of Russia’s relationship with European states, the assessment highlights the Western Balkans as a region increasingly affected by Moscow’s influence. It notes that Russia is actively fostering instability in Serbia, demonstrating strong political support for Belgrade over Kosovo. In disputes over Kosovo,
The report further points to Russia’s backing of separatist ambitions in Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the assessment, Moscow utilizes state-sponsored non-governmental organisations to undermine NATO and European Union initiatives across Serbia and other countries with substantial ethnic Serb populations.
Taken together, the findings present a clear picture of deepening Russian involvement in the region. In response, the European Union faces growing pressure to take decisive action to counter Moscow’s influence, particularly in its relationship with Serbia and across the wider Western Balkans.
